Giro d’Italia Mountains Classification Leader’s Jersey, 2003
Fredy González dominated the Mountains Classification (KOM) at the 2003 Giro, taking the green jersey on Stage 2 and retaining the lead all the way to the finish in Milan.
Fredy Excelino González Martínez, born June 18, 1975 in Líbano, Tolima, is a Colombian road climber and a two time winner of the Giro d’Italia Mountains Classification, taking the green jersey in 2001 and 2003. He finished second in the Mountains Competition in 2000 to Francesco Casagrande, received the combativity award in the 2003 Giro, and won the overall Tour de Langkawi in 2004. He raced professionally from 2000 to 2014 and is credited with 34 career victories.
Along with the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España, the Giro d’Italia is one of cycling’s Grand Tours. Founded in 1909 by the newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport to boost circulation, the race is now a cornerstone of the cycling calendar.
The mountains classification was introduced in 1933 and was first won by Alfredo Binda. During mountain stages, points are awarded to the first riders over each significant climb. In this era, the climber’s jersey was green, worn by the rider who, at the start of each stage, led the competition.
