Raymond Poulidor – Signed 1970s Team Polo Shirt

$130.00

Raymond Poulidor boldly signed one of his team polo shirts in black marker on the upper right front of the shirt. This is a bit of an unusual item as shirts from this era were rarely saved. This shirt is in near pristine condition.

Raymond Poulidor rode as a professional from 1960 until 1977.  He rode for the Gan-Mercier team from 1972 – 1976.

Poulidor had a very long and successful career, despite coinciding with two great riders – Jacques Anquetil and Eddy Merckx. This underdog position may have been the reason Poulidor was a favorite of the public. His nickname became “The Eternal Second” because he never won the Tour de France despite finishing in second place three times and in third place five times (including his final Tour at the age of 40). Despite his consistency, he never once wore the yellow jersey as leader of the 14 Tours in which he rode (he completed 12) He did win the Vuelta a Espana in 1964 along with many other races.
