Raleigh Advertising Poster, c.1940s – early 1950s

$680.00

Bold, clean and immediately recognizable, this original Raleigh advertising poster places a finely illustrated touring bicycle against the company’s name in monumental three-dimensional lettering. The red faces, dark blue shadows, and pale blue upper surfaces of the letters stand out crisply against the warm ochre background, while the bicycle cuts across the composition at a dramatic angle. Raleigh’s traditional heron emblem and the words “The Raleigh, Nottingham, England” complete a design that combines confident typography with exceptionally detailed product illustration.

The bicycle is a traditional men’s roadster or touring model equipped with full mudguards, a fully enclosed chaincase, rod-operated brakes, swept-back handlebars, a Brooks leather saddle, a tool bag, a frame pump, a headlamp, and a front-hub generator. Its appearance closely resembles Raleigh’s prestigious Superbe Tourist range, although the poster does not identify the specific model.

Established in Nottingham in 1887, Raleigh grew from a small workshop into the world’s largest bicycle manufacturer and one of the most recognizable names in British industry. The company became particularly renowned for its durable roadsters and touring bicycles, which were exported throughout the world and helped establish the traditional English bicycle as a dependable form of everyday transportation. Raleigh’s association with Sturmey-Archer—acquired by the company in 1902—also placed it at the forefront of practical hub gearing and bicycle technology. This poster captures Raleigh at the height of that international reputation, presenting the bicycle as a beautifully engineered and unmistakably British product.

Raleigh also established an important legacy in professional cycling, most notably through the formidable TI–Raleigh team of the 1970s and early 1980s. Managed by Peter Post and featuring riders such as Joop Zoetemelk, Jan Raas, Gerrie Knetemann and Hennie Kuiper, the Dutch-registered team became one of the dominant squads of its era, winning Grand Tour stages, team time trials and many of Europe’s major one-day races. Its greatest season came in 1980, when Zoetemelk won the Tour de France and TI–Raleigh collected an extraordinary 11 stage victories. That success helped establish Raleigh bicycles not simply as dependable everyday transportation, but as genuine racing machines proven at the highest level of the sport.

This poster has been professionally archivally linen-backed.

Virtually all original vintage posters of this era were viewed as temporary advertising and were printed on very thin paper. While expensive, linen backing is a conservation method used to mount, stabilize, preserve, and protect vintage posters, allowing them to be displayed or framed without compromising their value.

This poster is an original first printing, not a reproduction.
