Peugeot Bicycles, Stone Lithograph Poster

$580.00

This poster is an original first printing, not a reproduction.

This Peugeot poster features a wonderful image of a rider climbing in a beautiful mountain setting with tires wrapped around his shoulders.  The colors are lovely and the art nouveau touches complete the beautiful artwork.

Notes about this poster – Brett Horton

I set up our white studio lights and put them at full power so I could really look at this item in detail. Here is my take:
1. Original stone lithograph
2. Archival linen backed
3. No restoration
4. Very fresh colors. I’m guessing it probably has spent its entire life in a drawer, away from UV rays.
5. Normal age-related paper toning.
6. In the vertical area above the UGE of Peugeot are 4 small vertical printed lines. Those are there because a small monthly calendar would have originally hung in that spot. At the end of the year, some companies simply replaced the calendars with new ones while others tossed the calendar. The other original example I have in our collection has a calendar but I have absolutely no way to know if it was original to the poster when I bought it or if it was added at a later date as original period calendars are pretty easy to find.
As far as condition goes, I rate this A- on a scale of A+ to F. There is evidence of very minor paper bumping on the outside margins, measured in mm. The bumping is nowhere near the art and would likely be indistinguishable to the naked eye when framed. I enlarged the digital image up 400% and can see bumping to the orange area below the word Peugeot. There is normal trace scuffing on the poster. I did not notice either the bumping in the orange nor the scuffing until I saw the poster as a 50MB image on my 27″ screen. The linen is in good condition and was done right.

This poster has been archivally and professionally linen backed.  Virtually all original vintage posters of this era were viewed as temporary advertising and were printed on very thin paper. While expensive, linen backing is a conservation method used to mount, stabilize, preserve and protect vintage posters so they can be displayed or framed without compromising value.
