Paolo Bettini won the points classification at the Giro d’Italia in both 2005 and 2006. Bettini raced as a professional from 1997 until 2008 and was best known as a sprinting and classics specialist.

Bettini had a fantastic 2006 season.  He started off by winning the first race of the season, the Trofeo Soller.  He went on to win the Gran Premio de Lugano and two stages of the Tirreno-Adriatico.  At the 2006 Giro d’Italia, he won stage 15 and the overall Points Classification.  He finished off the season by winning the Italian Road Championships, a stage at the Vuelta a España and the World Championships.

The points jersey was first introduced to the Giro in 1966 was red and first won by Gianni Motta.  In 1969 the jersey was changed to purple remained that color until 2010 when it reverted back to the original red.
