In 1976 the promising young professional Jean-Luc Vandenbroucke was seen as a potential successor to the Belgian cycling crown of Eddy Merckx.

These beautiful large-format original press photographs are directly from the archives of Miroir du Cyclisme and Miroir-Sprint.  The reverse of each photo bears the Miroir markings as a road map of its history and authenticity. The images are all stamped by either Miroir du Cyclisme or Miroir-Sprint; many have publication crop marks or show the page and magazine issue the photo was used in.  Some even bear a unique stamp with the name of the photographer.

Miroir du Cyclisme was a French monthly magazine, a photo-focused wonderland of cycling news and historical articles for 35 years, from 1960 to 1994. The companion publication, Miroir-Sprint, came out weekly and reported on news of various sports from 1946 to 1971. In the era before streaming and on-demand viewing, publications like Miroir were how fans kept up on racing results, followed their favorite riders, and stayed current on all things cycling.

Renowned cycling photographers Henri and Marcel Besson, Jean Jaffre, Louis Lucchesi, Roger Monnet, Roger Touchard, and others were featured prominently in both publications, and works from these important photojournalists are included in the selection offered here.

Maurice Vidal founded the magazine and ran it until he died in 1992, which directly contributed to its long-time consistent look and feel.

The issues of both these publications are a treasure trove of cycling history; art and photographs are very collectible among cycling fans.

Jean-Luc Vandenbroucke is a Belgian racing cyclist , born on in Mouscron.

Biography

In 1973, Jean-Luc Vandenbroucke became European Pursuit Champion and Belgian Pursuit Champion. In 1974, he won the title of Belgian omnium champion and Belgian road champion. As an amateur, he had 220 track and road victories.

He turned professional in September 1975 and remained so until May 1988. He won 73 races during his career. His qualities as a former track racer enabled him to win 19 prologues.

During an interview with the newspaper L’Équipe, on the 14 and October, Jean-Luc Vandenbroucke tells the journalist: “It’s true that during the Tour de France, where I was struggling, I took anabolic steroids quite regularly, on the order of the doctor. (…) For more than three weeks, in the Tour de France, we are asked for superhuman efforts and I needed someone to give me something to hold on. Many do the same, believe me, and I don’t see the solution, except to shorten the stages.

After leaving the peloton as a rider, Jean-Luc Vandenbroucke became sports director of the Lotto cycling team from 1988 to 1999. In 2002, he was accused of fraud linked to the positive control of Djamolidine Abdoujaparov in 1997 for having manipulated the team’s accounts in order to hide doping-related expenses: in 2008, the Tournai criminal court ordered a dismissal because of the prescription of the facts. After his career, he became the director of Samyn and Binche-Chimay-Binche.

He is the uncle of Frank Vandenbroucke, himself a professional racing cyclist.
