Marco Pantani
Marco Pantani was one of the most electrifying climbers in modern cycling, a rider whose explosive attacks and unmistakable style made him a legend of the 1990s. Nicknamed “Il Pirata” because of his shaved head, earrings, and bandana, Pantani turned professional in 1992 and quickly established himself as a spectacular mountain specialist. He finished third in the 1994 Tour de France, winning the young rider classification, and then confirmed his promise with major mountain performances in both the Tour de France and the Giro d’Italia. His finest season came in 1998, when he achieved cycling’s rare and historic double by winning both the Giro d’Italia and the Tour de France in the same year.
Pantani’s 1998 Tour victory was especially memorable because he broke open the race in the mountains, most famously on the stage to Les Deux Alpes, where his long-range attack in terrible weather helped him take the yellow jersey from Jan Ullrich. At his peak, Pantani was not a rider who ground down opponents with steady power; he attacked with sudden violence on the steepest climbs, dancing out of the saddle and turning mountain stages into theater. His later career was troubled and shortened, but his place in cycling history remains secure as one of the sport’s greatest pure climbers and, for more than twenty-five years, the last rider to win the Giro and Tour in the same season.
