Zoetemelk first turned professional in 1970 when he rode for the Mars-Flandria team. He finished second to Eddy Merckx at that year’s Tour de France. Zoetemelk had a long and prolific career riding as a professional until 1987. A few highlights of his many victories are winning the Tour in 1980, winning 10 individual stages and the Tour and the Combination Classification in 1973, winning the Vuelta a España in 1979, and three wins of Paris-Nice.
