Jan Olieslagers was one of Belgium’s best-known early motorcycle racers. Born in Antwerp in 1883, Olieslagers began as a cyclist before becoming an internationally successful motorcycle racer for the Belgian Minerva company. Known as the “Antwerp Devil,” he established numerous speed records, became world motorcycle speed champion in 1902 and won the Paris–Bordeaux–Paris motorcycle race in 1904. He later turned to aviation, earning Belgian pilot’s license No. 5 in 1910 and becoming one of Belgium’s leading fighter pilots during the First World War.
