Cliché Barenne Cyclist Post Cards
1898
By Mark Holt, 2020
This set of early postcards may be the first series featuring cycling in France. The cards feature a black and white action photo of a racing cyclist or cycling scene on the left front and space for a message to the right of the photo. The backs are full address backs found prior to 1905, and some have ‘Republique Francaise’ at the top. The cards generally have ‘Cliché Barenne’ in the lower left front corner but they can also be found with no publisher credit. Three I have purchased were mailed in 1898. Many of the top track cyclists of the late 1890s are pictured, including a young Edmund Jacquelin and the American ace, A. A. Zimmerman.
