Freddy Maertens is a Belgian cycling icon and widely considered one of the top riders of all time, distinguished by his exceptional victories during the 1970s and early 1980s. Renowned for his sprinting prowess, Maertens clinched the Tour de France Green Jersey in 1976, 1978, and 1981, showcasing his unparalleled speed and agility. Maertens was the overall winner of the Vuelta a España in 1977 and ended his career with 36 Grand Tour Stage wins. His dominance extended beyond stage races to one-day classics, where he secured victories in the Tour of Flanders, Paris-Nice, Gent-Wevelgem, and many more. Maertens’ stellar career includes two wins at the World Championships, where he earned the rainbow jersey in 1976 and 1981, further solidifying his status among the cycling greats.
