The France-Soir newspaper was a long-time sponsor of the Tour de France. Printed in secret in the Sorbonne’s cellars, it became the largest circulation newspaper of the French resistance, distributing up to 450,000 copies daily by January 1944.
After the war, the newspaper was renamed France-Soir – Défense de la France and printed its first issue on November 7, 1944, using the presses of Paris-Soir newspaper. The name was later shortened to France Soir.
Under the leadership of chief editor Pierre Lazareff, France Soir flourished in the 1950s and 1960s, becoming one of Europe’s most widely circulated newspapers. It achieved a peak circulation of 1.5 million in 1955 and remained highly popular throughout the late 1950s
