Floyd Landis Signed, 2006 Tour of California Jersey

$240.00

Tour of California, Post Podium Awards Leaders Jersey, signed by race winner Floyd Landis

The inaugural Tour of California in 2006 was an exciting event, thrilling American crowds as professional riders took to the roads of California. The race began with a prologue time trial on the hilly streets of San Francisco and wound its way south along the breathtaking coastline, culminating in a circuit race in Redondo Beach. Floyd Landis of the Phonak Team seized the race lead on Stage 3 and ultimately secured overall race victory, finishing just 34 seconds ahead of Bobby Julich after Stage 7.

Landis was a versatile rider with exceptional skills in climbing, time-trialing, and descending. He turned professional in 1999 with the Mercury Cycling Team, joined the U.S. Postal Service team in 2002, and moved to the Phonak Hearing Systems team in 2005.

At the 2006 Tour de France, Landis was accused of doping, subsequently suspended from professional cycling, and dismissed from his team. After serving a two-year ban, he returned to competition in early 2009 with the OUCH Pro Cycling Team, a U.S.-based domestic racing team.

For years, he maintained his innocence and fought the allegations. However, on May 20, 2010, after nearly four years of denial, Landis admitted to doping. He also exposed widespread doping within professional cycling, implicating Lance Armstrong and several top riders from his former teams. Many regard him as the whistleblower who ultimately brought down Armstrong and the USPS Cycling Team

Tour of California

The Tour of California, officially sponsored as the Amgen Tour of California, was an annual professional road cycling stage race on the UCI World Tour and USA Cycling Professional Tour that ran from 2006 to 2019. It was the only event on the top-level World Tour in the United States. The eight-day race covered 650–700 miles (1,045–1,126 km) through California.

A typical edition might begin in the Sierra Nevada in northern California, travel through the Redwood forests, Wine Country, and the Pacific Coast, and finish in southern California. The 2009 race crossed the Central Valley from Merced to Fresno, with an excursion through the Sierra Nevada foothills before reaching the coast.

With eight or nine of the 20 UCI ProTour teams (known as ProTeams) usually participating, the Tour of California was one of the most important cycling races in the United States. In 2006, the UCI upgraded it from category 2.1 to 2.HC (Hors Catégorie, or “beyond category”), the highest rating for races on the UCI Continental Circuits. As of 2019, the Tour of Utah was the only other 2.HC race. In 2016, the UCI elevated the race to World Tour status, adding it to the 2017 UCI World Tour schedule.

Originally staged in February, the Tour of California moved to May in 2010, coinciding with the Giro d’Italia. Organizers aimed to position the race as a preparatory event for the Tour de France, believing that riders targeting a strong Tour performance would be less likely to compete in the Giro. The race continued to be held in May until its final edition in 2019.
