Eddy Merckx, Signed 1976 Milan-San Remo Campagnolo Poster

$1,140.00

While we in the United States were getting ready to celebrate the Bicentennial, across the ocean, Eddy was already celebrating, albeit for a different reason. In 1976, Eddy won Milano-San Remo for the seventh time. How many pros would be elated to win this Monument even once, let alone seven times?

This is by far our favorite Campagnolo poster. The photographer captured the pride in Eddy’s eyes and the sheer joy on the face of cycling’s elder statesman, Tullio Campagnolo, as the tifosi celebrated Merckx’s victory at one of Italy’s most important races. Campagnolo, founded by Tullio Campagnolo, is the famed Italian component maker long associated with champions like Merckx.

With 525 career victories to his name, Eddy Merckx is the most successful rider in cycling history.  Highlights of his storied career include winning eleven Grand Tours, all five Monuments, three professional road World Championships, the Hour Record, every major one-day race (except Paris-Tours), and numerous track racing victories.

A vibrant crowd scene, rich color, and a joyous moment from one of Italy’s most important races make this a standout display piece for Merckx and Campagnolo collectors alike.

This poster is an original first printing, not a reproduction.

This poster has been archivally and professionally linen-backed.

Virtually all original vintage posters of this era were viewed as temporary advertising and were printed on very thin paper. While expensive, linen backing is a conservation method used to mount, stabilize, preserve, and protect vintage posters, allowing them to be displayed or framed without compromising their value.
