Convincing Eddy to sign a clean signature instead of a quick scrawl autograph is hard enough to achieve. Getting him to inscribe the year and race takes things up another level. A few years ago, we had some time left at the end of a litho signing and made the request to sign and race inscribe a handful of original photos. After he briefly sighed for dramatic effect, he asked what we had, looked the photos over, and said, “Sure. Let’s go.” We had 12 photos and each was unique. What should have taken perhaps 10 minutes ending up lasting more than half an hour as he had commentary for each photo.

There is precisely one example of each photo. When it’s gone, it’s gone!

Eddy Merckx dominated the 1969 Tour de France like no other. Upon arriving in Paris, Merckx not only won the Tour by 17′ 54″ over Roger Pingeon along the way, but he also won 6 stages and every other category: Sprint, Mountains, Combination, and Team.
