Description

Cabinet cards were first introduced in the 1860’s and were at peak popularity in the 1880’s largely as a form of portrait photography.  The cabinet card consists of a thin photograph mounted on a heavy weight card typically 4 1/4 by 6 1/2 inches in size.

This popular photography style was a fixture in the late 19th century Victorian parlor.  They were typically displayed in a cabinet, hence the name, and were large enough to be easily enjoyed from across the room. Popularity of cabinet cards began to decline in the 1890’s as technology advanced and personal photography became more common.  Cabinet cards continued to be produced into the the early 1900’s in the US and longer in Europe.  The last cabinet cards were made in the 1930’s.
