Who won the 1949 Criterium Mere Picon? Only you!! Post-WWII brought bicycle racing back into the spotlight and the French openly embraced any sign of returning to normalcy. The presentation of the poster has a distinct look and feel of a race poster, yet there are no dates. That is because this striking poster is for the French cheesemaker, Mere Picon. Once a customer purchased 20 portions of Mere Picon cheese, they sent in the proof of purchase labels and the company sent them a really cool cycling-themed board game called “Criterium de la Mere Picon”. Not surprising, there are substantially more surviving examples of the game than the poster as the poster was principally displayed at stores that sold its cheese.
This poster is an original first printing, not a reproduction.
This poster has been archivally and professionally linen backed. Virtually all original vintage posters of this era were viewed as temporary advertising and were printed on very thin paper. While expensive, linen backing is a conservation method used to mount, stabilize, preserve and protect vintage posters so they can be displayed or framed without compromising value.
