Chann McRae was a versatile all-arounder whose career carried him from the domestic U.S. scene to the European professional cycling scene. Born in Albany, Georgia, McRae turned professional in the mid 1990s and built a résumé that included victories at the Lancaster Classic and First Union Invitational, strong international results with Mapei and Mercury, a 5th place finish in the 1999 World Championship road race, an 8th place finish in the 2000 World Championship road race, and 17th overall at the 2000 Giro d’Italia. His defining achievement came in 2002, while riding for the United States Postal Service team, when he won the U.S. elite men’s road race national championship in Philadelphia. This national champion’s jersey, acquired by Brett directly from McRae at the 2002 SF Grand Prix, reflects that career peak and his place inside one of the most famous American teams in cycling history.

The United States Postal Service Pro Cycling Team raced under USPS sponsorship from 1996 through 2004 and became the most visible American professional cycling team of its era. Known for its blue kits, Trek bicycles, Nike apparel, and disciplined Grand Tour structure, the team rose from a U.S.-backed program into a dominant force on the international stage. Its roster included many of the leading American and European riders of the period, among them Lance Armstrong, George Hincapie, Viatcheslav Ekimov, Christian Vande Velde, Roberto Heras, Floyd Landis, and Chann McRae. During the Postal years, the team won major races, Tour de France team time trials, national titles, and the 2003 Vuelta a España with Roberto Heras, while Armstrong’s Tour de France victories from the era were later stripped following the USADA investigation.
