Challenge Martini Tour de France, Team Classification Podium Pennant
The Challenge Martini was sponsored by Martini & Rossi, an Italian company known for its production of vermouth and sparkling wines. Founded in 1863 in Turin, Italy, Martini became a globally recognized brand, closely associated with cycling and motorsports through its sponsorships. The company leveraged its presence in the Tour de France to enhance its visibility in the European market, linking its brand to the prestige and endurance of professional cycling.
The Challenge Martini was the name of the team classification in the Tour de France from 1949 to 1964. This competition recognized the best-performing team throughout the race. Teams were judged based on the cumulative performance of their top riders, with the calculation methods evolving over the years
Team Classification Calculation Methods:
-
1930–1961: Initially, the team classification was determined by adding the times of the three best cyclists from each team in the general classification.
-
1961–1962: The calculation shifted to a points-based system, where teams earned points based on their performance in each stage. The team with the highest points total led the classification.
-
1963 Onwards: The classification reverted to the time-based calculation, similar to the original method.
Members of the leading team in the Challenge Martini Team Classification received this podium pennant and were distinguished during the race by wearing yellow caps.
