This lovely medal was issued to all participants of the 2008 Tour de France. One side is a convex surface decorated with a chain ring motif and the Tour Logo. The other is a detailed yellow map of the 2008 Tour route.
The 2008 Tour de France was the 95th running of the race. The event took place from 5 to 27 July. Starting in the French city of Brest, the tour entered Italy on the 15th stage and returned to France during the 16th, heading for Paris, its regular final destination, which was reached in the 21st stage. The race was won by Carlos Sastre, with Cadel Evans and Denis Menchov in second and third.
The 2008 Tour was a combative race with seven different riders donning the Yellow Jersey. Carlos Sastre won Stage 17, a mountain top finish on Alpe d’Huez, taking the overall race lead and holding on to it by only 58 seconds over Cadel Evans at the finish in Paris.
