Description
Tour of Qatar
The Tour of Qatar was a professional multi-stage road race held annually in Qatar from 2002 to 2016, organized by the Amaury Sport Organisation and part of the UCI Asia Tour. The flat, wind-swept terrain favored sprinters and classics specialists: Belgian Tom Boonen claimed a record four overall titles (2006, 2008, 2009, 2012) and amassed 22 stage victories. Other multiple winners include Mark Cavendish, who took the overall in 2013 and added nine stage wins, and Niki Terpstra, champion in 2014 and 2015. The race doubled as early-season preparation for the spring classics, offering sprinters and time-trial specialists a platform on wide-open courses shaped by strategic crosswinds.
2007 Tour of Qatar
The 6th Tour of Qatar (28 Jan–2 Feb 2007) unfolded over six stages across 715.5 km of predominantly flat, wind-exposed terrain—perfect for sprinters and time-trialists. The race began with a 6 km team time trial in Doha, claimed by Quick-Step–Innergetic, setting the stage for teammate Steven de Jongh to take the first GC lead. Sprint specialist Tom Boonen dominated the next three mass sprints (Stages 2–4), while Greg Van Avermaet broke the sequence by winning the fifth stage to Al Zubarah–Mesaieed. Boonen then secured Stage 6 at Sealine Beach Resort–Doha Corniche. Despite Boonen’s stage prowess and points jersey, Wilfried Cretskens leveraged consistent performance—finishing in the top ranks and excelling in Stage 5—to clinch the overall victory in 15 h 50 min 58 s, finishing 2 min 9 s ahead of Boonen, with Steven de Jongh rounding out the podium
