Tom Boonen
Tom Boonen (born 15 October 1980 in Mol, Belgium) is a retired Belgian professional road cyclist known for his dominance in one-day Classics and sprint finishes. Boonen raced professionally from 2002 to 2017, spending nearly his entire career with the Quick-Step team. He is best known for winning Paris–Roubaix a record-tying four times (2005, 2008, 2009, 2012) and Tour of Flanders three times (2005, 2006, 2012), cementing his status as one of the greatest Classics riders of all time. In 2005, Boonen won the UCI Road World Championship, becoming only the second Belgian to do so in the modern era, and also claimed the Tour of Flanders and Paris–Roubaix in the same season—an achievement matched by few. He won six individual Tour de France stages and won the Green Jersey during the 2007 edition. Boonen also dominated early-season stage races, such as the Tour of Qatar, where he took four overall victories (2006, 2008, 2009, 2012) and 22 stage wins, making him the most successful rider in the event’s history. He retired in 2017 after a farewell ride at Paris–Roubaix.
Tour of Qatar
The Tour of Qatar was a professional multi-stage road race held annually in Qatar from 2002 to 2016, organized by the Amaury Sport Organisation and part of the UCI Asia Tour. The flat, wind-swept terrain favored sprinters and classics specialists: Belgian Tom Boonen claimed a record four overall titles (2006, 2008, 2009, 2012) and amassed 22 stage victories. Other multiple winners include Mark Cavendish, who took the overall in 2013 and added nine stage wins, and Niki Terpstra, champion in 2014 and 2015. The race doubled as early-season preparation for the spring classics, offering sprinters and time-trial specialists a platform on wide-open courses shaped by strategic crosswinds.
