42. Bremer Tage Rennen, Bremen Six Day 2006 Poster
Featuring: Erik Zabel & Rolf Aldag

Bold and colorful original poster for the 42. Bremer Tage Rennen, the 42nd Bremen Six Day track race, held in the AWD Dome, Bremen, from 12 to 17 January 2006. The bright blue background is dominated at the top by the mastheads of Weser Kurier and Radio Bremen, together with the brewery Haake Beck, presented as the event’s main partners.

At the center of the design sits a dynamic photo of riders sprinting on the boards, captured with deliberate motion blur so that bars, helmets, and wheels streak across the image, perfectly conveying the speed and intensity of Six-day racing. Over this image, a red banner announces the big news for that year:

“Weltelite am Start Zabel Aldag zum ersten Mal in Bremen”

which proudly tells fans that world-class German road stars Erik Zabel and Rolf Aldag would ride the Bremen Six Day for the very first time. Their participation was a major attraction of the 2006 edition, and this poster ensures it is front and center.

In the lower part of the poster, the multi colored 6 logo of the Bremen Six Day appears next to the event title “42. Bremer Tage Rennen” and the dates 12. bis 17. Januar 2006, with AWD dome Bremen printed beneath. A red information box promises “Freie Fahrt für Bahnradfans” in cooperation with the local public transport system, while a row of sponsor logos along the bottom edge highlights the broad commercial support behind the event.

The Bremen Six Day is one of the classic winter fixtures on the European Six-day circuit. Two rider teams race Madisons, points races, and time trials over six consecutive evenings, with the final classification decided on laps and points. At the 2006 edition promoted here, the overall victory went to Dutch specialists Robert Slippens and Danny Stam, after a tight battle that also featured Zabel and his partner Marco Villa.

With its saturated colors, strong typography, and clear reference to the first appearance of Zabel and Aldag in Bremen, this poster is an excellent piece for collectors of Six-day memorabilia.

This poster has been archivally and professionally linen-backed.

Virtually all original vintage posters of this era were viewed as temporary advertising and were printed on fragile, thin paper. While expensive, linen backing is a conservation method used to mount, stabilize, preserve, and protect vintage posters, allowing them to be displayed or framed without compromising their value.

This poster is an original first printing, not a reproduction.

Description

So, What is Six-day Racing, Anyway?

Six-day track racing originated in the 19th century as part of a fascination with novel endurance sporting events. The earliest six-day races were straightforward contests to see who could ride the most laps on a track over six days. The format soon evolved to feature two-man teams, with riders taking turns on the track and dividing up the 24-hour periods—they even ate meals while riding.

Modern six-day racing takes place over six nights on indoor tracks, typically from 6 pm to 2 am. The overall winner is the team that completes the most laps. In addition to the “chase” to gain laps over competitors, a typical six-day program includes time trials, motor-paced races, intermediate sprints, and elimination races.

In the “chase” or Madison events (named after Madison Square Garden in New York City, where the two-rider format was devised), both riders may be on the track simultaneously, taking turns racing and using a hand-sling technique to propel each other back into action.
