2001 Vuelta Jersey, Signed by Angel Casero after Stage 21
Ángel Casero’s victory in the 2001 Vuelta a España was one of the race’s great late reversals. Riding for Festina, the Spanish time trial specialist stayed close to race leader Óscar Sevilla through the final week, then overturned a 25-second deficit on the last day in Madrid with a decisive ride in the concluding 38-kilometer individual time trial. Casero finished fourth on the stage, but that was enough to secure overall victory in a final time of 70:49:05, winning the Vuelta by 47 seconds over Sevilla, with Levi Leipheimer third. The result gave Casero the only Grand Tour victory of his career and sealed one of the closest and most dramatic overall finishes of the era.
Ángel Casero is a Spanish former professional cyclist, born on September 27, 1972, in Albalat dels Tarongers, who built his career around stage racing and time trialing. Racing professionally from the 1990s into the 2000s, he developed into one of Spain’s strongest general classification riders, with the high point of his career coming in 2001 when he won the Vuelta a España. Along the way, he also won the Spanish national road race title in 1998 and again in 1999, and he later rode for teams including Festina, Coast, and Team Bianchi. Casero is remembered above all for his consistency, his strength against the clock, and his ability to deliver the defining Grand Tour victory of his career in one of the closest Vueltas of the era.
