Rich cream background and gold lettering set this official Italian poster apart. It announces the 1999 UCI Road World Championships in Veneto, with Treviso and Verona named in the central emblem and the rainbow stripes below. Along the bottom sit the five heraldic crests of the hosts, Comune di Treviso, Provincia di Treviso, Regione del Veneto, Provincia di Verona, Comune di Verona. The championships ran from October 3rd to 10th 1999.
Results were memorable: Óscar Freire won the men’s road race in Verona, Jan Ullrich won the men’s time trial, Edita Pučinskaitė won the women’s road race, and Leontien Zijlaard-van Moorsel won the women’s time trial. In the under-twenty-three events, Leonardo Giordani won the road race and José Iván Gutiérrez won the time trial. Among the juniors, Damiano Cunego won the men’s road race, Fabian Cancellara won the men’s time trial, and Geneviève Jeanson swept the junior women’s road race and time trial.
Clean graphics, official insignia, and a compact square format give this poster a strong display presence for collectors of World Championships.
This poster has been archivally and professionally linen-backed.
Virtually all original vintage posters of this era were viewed as temporary advertising and were printed on very thin paper. While expensive, linen backing is a conservation method used to mount, stabilize, preserve, and protect vintage posters, allowing them to be displayed or framed without compromising their value.
This poster is an original first printing, not a reproduction.
