1999 Tour de France, Official Race Poster

$300.00

This poster for the 1999 Tour de France encapsulates multiple elements of the Tour’s identity through a layered and symbolic design. It employs a 1950s-inspired aesthetic, featuring the silhouette of a cyclist racing past a backdrop of the iconic yellow, polka dot, and green jerseys, representing the Overall, Mountains, and Points classifications, respectively. Notably absent is the white jersey, which, while the Young Rider classification was introduced in 1975, was not physically awarded between 1989 and 1999. The white jersey would return in 2000 and has remained a fixture in the race ever since.

Beneath the cyclist, a series of rivets and a spherical form—likely symbolizing the Earth—highlight the Tour’s global significance. Riders from around the world travel to France, often by plane, to compete in cycling’s most prestigious event. This theme is reinforced by the inclusion of a yellow postal label with two upward-pointing red arrows—an international shipping symbol for “This Side Up.” The implication is clear: these athletes are precious cargo, arriving upright and race-ready, heads up, feet down, prepared for battle.

This poster has been archivally and professionally linen-backed. Virtually all original vintage posters of this era were viewed as temporary advertising and were printed on very thin paper. While expensive, linen backing is a conservation method used to mount, stabilize, preserve, and protect vintage posters so they can be displayed or framed without compromising value.

This poster is an original first printing, not a reproduction.

Description

1999 Tour de France

The 1999 Tour de France was the first edition held after the Festina scandal of 1998 and was heavily scrutinized for doping. The race was won by Lance Armstrong (USA), who initially claimed his first Tour victory that year. However, all seven of Armstrong’s Tour titles, including 1999, were officially stripped by the UCI in 2012 due to doping violations. As a result, the official Tour de France record no longer lists a winner for 1999.

Mountains Classification was won by Richard Virenque (France),
Points Classification (Green Jersey) by Erik Zabel (Germany),
Best Young Rider by Benoît Salmon (France),
The Combativity Award went to Jacky Durand (France).
