Giro d’Italia Poster Featuring Fausto Coppi & Gino Bartali

Atmospheric promotional poster created for “Vetrine in Rosa”, the shop-window campaign run by Confcommercio and La Gazzetta dello Sport during the 82º Giro d’Italia in 1999. The design is built around the legendary sepia photograph of Fausto Coppi and Gino Bartali climbing side by side on a mountain road, sharing a bidon between them on the Col du Galibier during the 1952 Tour de France. The image is softly vignetted, fading into a pink field that echoes the maglia rosa, the Giro leader’s jersey. Below, blue lettering spells out “Vetrine in Rosa” and “CONFCOMMERCIO”, with the official 82º Giro d’Italia logo and La Gazzetta dello Sport masthead at the bottom. A municipal rubber stamp in the lower-right corner, dated 4 June 1999, directly links the piece to the 1999 race.

The 1999 Giro d’Italia, the 82nd edition of the corsa rosa, ran from 15 May to 6 June 1999 over 22 stages and 3,757 km. Italian climber Ivan Gotti (Team Polti) won the overall classification, taking his second Giro title, with compatriots Paolo Savoldelli and Gilberto Simoni completing an all-Italian podium. Laurent Jalabert of France secured the points classification, Colombian Chepe González won the mountains classification, and Italian sprinter Fabrizio Guidi took the intergiro jersey.

These lovely “Vetrine in Rosa” are quite scarce as they were only given to shopkeepers in the Start/Finish towns to publicize the race and were not sold to fans.

This poster has been archivally and professionally linen-backed.

Virtually all original vintage posters of this era were viewed as temporary advertising and were printed on fragile, thin paper. While expensive, linen backing is a conservation method used to mount, stabilize, preserve, and protect vintage posters, allowing them to be displayed or framed without compromising their value.
