1998 World Cycling Championships – Valkenburg, Maastricht, Margraten

Original event poster for the 1998 UCI Road World Championships held in the Limburg region of the Netherlands. The design is clean and contemporary, printed on a bright white ground with large red and blue shapes that are enlarged elements of the official logo, which depicts a stylised cyclist in motion at the center of the composition above the text Valkenburg Maastricht Margraten 1998”.

The upper left corner carries the legend “World Cycling Championships – October 6–11, 1998 – Valkenburg, Maastricht, Margraten, The Netherlands”, clearly tying the piece to this important edition of the Worlds. Down the left side run sponsor marks for Rabobank, Amstel Bier, Lete Acqua Minerale, and VISA. On the right are two small action photographs – one of a race in progress, one of packed spectators lining the course – along with additional partner logos and a narrow vertical band in the world champion rainbow colours near the bottom edge.

This championship is remembered for several significant results. In the elite men’s road race in Valkenburg, Swiss rider Oskar Camenzind claimed the rainbow jersey ahead of Peter Van Petegem and Michele Bartoli. The elite men’s time trial from Maastricht to Vilt was won by Spaniard Abraham Olano, with Melcior Mauri and Serhiy Honchar taking silver and bronze. In the elite women’s road race, Lithuanian star Diana Žiliūtė took gold, while home favourite Leontien van Moorsel won the elite women’s time trial earlier in the week, adding to Dutch pride on home roads.

Visually strong yet understated, this poster is an excellent piece for anyone collecting World Championship material.

This poster has been archivally and professionally linen-backed.

Virtually all original vintage posters of this era were viewed as temporary advertising and were printed on very thin paper. While expensive, linen backing is a conservation method used to mount, stabilize, preserve, and protect vintage posters so they can be displayed or framed without compromising value.

This poster is an original first printing, not a reproduction.
