1997 UCI World Championships – Donostia–San Sebastián, Spain
Campeonatoes del Mundo de Ciclismo – Munduko Txirrindularitza Txapelketak

Created for the 1997 UCI Road World Championships, this striking poster celebrates both international cycling and the host city of Donostia–San Sebastián. An expansive aerial photograph captures the city’s dramatic coastline, including Zurriola Beach, the mouth of the Urumea River, Monte Urgull and La Concha Bay. Above it, photographs of Spanish champions Miguel Induráin and Abraham Olano are set between the event emblem and the contemporary UCI logo. The championship title appears in Basque, French, English, and Spanish, reflecting the event’s international character, while the dates—7–12 October 1997—are printed in both Basque and Spanish.

Induráin and Olano were particularly fitting choices for the poster. At the 1995 World Championships in Duitama, Colombia, Induráin won the individual time trial with Olano second; four days later, Olano won the road race ahead of Induráin. The pair repeated their gold-and-silver finish in the time trial at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, where Induráin took gold and Olano silver.

The 1997 championships comprised ten races: road races and individual time trials for elite men, elite women, under-23 men, junior men and junior women. France swept the elite men’s titles. Laurent Brochard won the road race ahead of Denmark’s Bo Hamburger and the Netherlands’ Léon van Bon, while Laurent Jalabert won the time trial, narrowly defeating Ukraine’s Serhiy Honchar, with Britain’s Chris Boardman third. Italy’s Alessandra Cappellotto won the elite women’s road race ahead of Australia’s Elisabeth Tadich and France’s Catherine Marsal. Jeannie Longo captured the women’s time-trial title by less than one second over Russia’s Zulfiya Zabirova, with Germany’s Judith Arndt taking bronze.

The younger categories featured several riders who would later become major figures in professional cycling. Norway’s Kurt Asle Arvesen won the under-23 road race, defeating future three-time elite road world champion Óscar Freire and Austria’s Gerrit Glomser. Fabio Malberti won the under-23 time trial, while Crescenzo D’Amore and Mirella van Melis captured the junior road-race titles. Torsten Hiekmann won the junior men’s time trial by only one second over future elite time-trial world champion Michael Rogers, and Olga Zabelinskaya won the junior women’s time trial.

This poster has been archivally and professionally linen-backed.

Virtually all original vintage posters of this era were viewed as temporary advertising and were printed on very thin paper. While expensive, linen backing is a conservation method used to mount, stabilize, preserve, and protect vintage posters, allowing them to be displayed or framed without compromising their value.

This poster is an original first printing, not a reproduction.
