Nel Veneto i Campionati mondiali di ciclismo 1985
The 1985 Cycling World Championships in Veneto.

Created for the 1985 UCI Cycling World Championships in Italy’s Veneto region, this wonderfully colorful poster promoted both the track and road competitions. The track championships were at Bassano del Grappa from 21–27 August and the road championships in the Montello–Treviso area from 28 August–1 September. The period UCI emblem is prominently displayed at the top, flanked by the initials of the Italian National Olympic Committee, CONI, and the Italian Cycling Federation, FCI.

Bold, playful, and unmistakably Italian, this original poster uses brilliant blocks of blue and green to suggest mountains and water, alongside the distinctive prow of a Venetian gondola, a stylized bicycle, and diagonal bands in the colors of the world champion’s rainbow jersey. At the right is the championship’s cheerful mascot, dressed in green and wearing a feathered hat inspired by the Italian Alpini—a fitting reference to Bassano del Grappa, Monte Grappa, and the mountain heritage of the region.

The road program was contested at Giavera del Montello and comprised four championships: the professional men’s road race, the women’s road race, the amateur men’s road race and the amateur men’s 100-kilometer team time trial. Its most memorable result came on 1 September, when Dutch veteran Joop Zoetemelk won the professional road championship. The 265.5-kilometer race covered 18 laps of a 14.75-kilometer circuit and was expected to favor riders such as Greg LeMond, Moreno Argentin, Stephen Roche and defending champion Claude Criquielion. Zoetemelk surprised the leading group with a late solo attack and reached the finish three seconds ahead of LeMond, with Italian favorite Argentin taking the bronze medal. At 38, Zoetemelk became—and remains—the oldest winner of the elite men’s road-race world championship.

France’s Jeannie Longo won the women’s road race ahead of Italy’s Maria Canins and West Germany’s Sandra Schumacher. Lech Piasecki of Poland captured the amateur men’s road championship, followed by Denmark’s Johnny Weltz and Belgium’s Franck Van De Vijver. The Soviet Union won the amateur 100-kilometer team time trial with Vassili Jdanov, Viktor Klimov, Igor Sumnikov and Alexandre Zinoviev; Czechoslovakia took silver and Italy bronze.

The track championships were held at Bassano del Grappa’s Rino Mercante Stadium and included 14 events: five for professional men, seven for amateur men and two for women. Japan’s Kōichi Nakano won his ninth consecutive professional sprint title, part of an extraordinary sequence of ten straight world championships between 1977 and 1986. Switzerland’s Urs Freuler won both the professional keirin and points race, Denmark’s Hans-Henrik Ørsted captured the professional individual pursuit, and Italy’s Bruno Vicino won the professional motor-paced championship. Among the amateur champions were East Germany’s Lutz Heßlich in the sprint and Soviet rider Viatcheslav Ekimov in the individual pursuit, while Italy won the team pursuit. France’s Isabelle Nicoloso captured the women’s sprint, and American Rebecca Twigg won the women’s individual pursuit ahead of Jeannie Longo.

With its exuberant colors, regional imagery, and distinctive mascot, this poster is a memorable piece of 1980s cycling design.

This poster has been archivally and professionally linen-backed.

Virtually all original vintage posters of this era were viewed as temporary advertising and were printed on very thin paper. While expensive, linen backing is a conservation method used to mount, stabilize, preserve, and protect vintage posters, allowing them to be displayed or framed without compromising their value.

This poster is an original first printing, not a reproduction.
