1980 Tour de France, Combativity Award Podium Pennant
Prix de la Combativite Trophee, Sponsor Banania

At the 1980 Tour, the Combativity Award was given after each mass-start stage to the cyclist deemed most combative. For split stages, a single winner was chosen based on overall performance. A jury of journalists awarded points, and the cyclist with the highest total across all stages led the combativity classification. Christian Levavasseur won this classification overall and received the overall Super-Combativity Award on the final stage in Paris.

Joop Zoetemelk claimed the yellow jersey on Stage 13 of the 1980 Tour de France and retained it through the remainder of the race, ultimately finishing nearly seven minutes ahead of second-place Hennie Kuiper and nearly eight minutes over third place Raymond Martin. It was Zoetemelk’s first Tour de France victory in his tenth attempt, having previously finished as the runner-up five times.

Rudy Pevenage won the points and intermediate sprints classifications. Raymond Martin claimed the mountains classification, while Johan van der Velde secured the young rider classification.

Banania is a popular chocolate drink, most widely distributed in France. It is made from cocoa, banana flour, cereals, honey, and sugar. Two types of Banania are available in French supermarkets: ‘traditional,’ which must be cooked with milk for 10 minutes, and ‘instant,’ which can be prepared in a similar fashion to Nesquik in the US. Banania sponsored the Yellow Jersey and Combativity Award at the Tour de France and was often part of the Caravan.

Description

1980 Tour de France

The 1980 Tour de France was the 67th edition of the Tour de France. The total distance was 3,842 km (2,387 mi) over 22 stages. In the first half of the race, Bernard Hinault started out strong by winning the prologue and two stages. However, knee problems forced Hinault to abandon the race while still in the lead. Joop Zoetemelk became the new leader and defended that position successfully. Just as in 1979 when Hinault and Zoetemelk finished nearly a half-hour ahead of the rest of the field, the 1980 edition was a battle between these two riders until Hinault abandoned. At the time, Hinault was just 21 seconds ahead of Zoetemelk, and the race was about to enter the Pyrenees. Zoetemelk did not wear the yellow jersey during stage 13, though he did in every stage thereafter, finishing the race with nearly a seven-minute advantage over second-place Hennie Kuiper. It was his first Tour victory in his tenth attempt, after already having finished second in five editions.

The points classification was won by Rudy Pevenage, who also won the intermediate sprints classification. The mountain classification was won by Raymond Martin, and Johan van der Velde won the young rider classification
