Bold blocks of color and clean modern graphics make this original 1969 World Championships poster a standout piece of Belgian design. At the top, the UCI and K.B.W.B. (Royal Belgian Cycling League) titles frame a huge white letter B that dominates the composition, a clear nod to both Belgium and the beroepsrenners, the professional riders featured in these championships. Arcing across the upper half is the full rainbow of world champion stripes in blue, red, black, yellow, and green, instantly linking the image to the UCI World Championships. In front of a stylised globe highlighted in yellow, a smiling racing cyclist powers straight toward the viewer, rendered in crisp black lines against a soft blue sky and a deep black ground. Below, the text “Wereldkampioenschappen der beroepsrenners 1969, baan: Antwerpen, weg: Zolder” anchors the design and fixes the venues in time and place.
The poster promotes the 1969 professional World Championships, with the track events for pros held in Antwerp from 5 to 9 August and the road race contested on the motor racing circuit at Zolder on 10 August. The men’s professional road race at Zolder produced one of the great surprise results in World Championship history, when Dutch rider Harm Ottenbros outsprinted Belgian home favourite Julien Stevens, with Italian Michele Dancelli taking the bronze medal. For collectors, this poster captures that moment when Belgium stood at the centre of the cycling world, hosting both the track and road championships in the same week.
The artwork is signed by Belgian painter and poster artist Herman Verbaere, born in Wetteren in 1905 and active as a landscape painter, illustrator, engraver, and prolific affichiste. Verbaere designed many travel and advertising posters, particularly for the Belgian national railway SNCB from the 1930s through the 1960s, and later worked on Belgian postage stamp issues in the 1960s. His bold, simplified figure of the rider and the strong graphic balance between the giant B, the rainbow stripes, and the map of Europe give this piece a distinctly mid-century feel that still looks sharp and contemporary on the wall.
This is an original 1969 printing, produced in Belgium for the UCI World Championships hosted in Antwerp and Zolder, and an excellent choice for anyone who collects World Championship memorabilia.
This poster has been archivally and professionally linen-backed.
Virtually all original vintage posters of this era were viewed as temporary advertising and were printed on very thin paper. While expensive, linen backing is a conservation method used to mount, stabilize, preserve, and protect vintage posters, allowing them to be displayed or framed without compromising their value.
This poster is an original first printing, not a reproduction.
