Championnats du Monde Cyclistes 1966
Strassen-Rad-Weltmeisterschaft
This original event poster from the 1966 UCI Road World Championships is a bold, high-contrast piece that captures the energy and motion of professional cycling. Designed in a dynamic black-and-white style, it features a pack of riders in motion, their forms abstracted to emphasize speed and movement. The only splashes of color are the bright blue titles and the iconic rainbow stripes of the World Champion, along with the Martini International Club sponsor logo in the lower right corner.
The poster advertises the full slate of championship events: the 100 km amateur team time trial in Cologne on August 25, followed by the individual amateur, women’s, and professional men’s races at the Nürburgring on August 27–28. The 1966 championships crowned some of the most iconic riders of the era: Rudi Altig of West Germany claimed victory in the men’s professional road race in front of a home crowd, defeating Jacques Anquetil (France) and Raymond Poulidor (France). Yvonne Reynders of Belgium won the women’s road race, while the amateur men’s title went to Evert Grasmann of the Netherlands.
This poster has been archivally and professionally linen-backed. Virtually all original vintage posters of this era were viewed as temporary advertising and were printed on very thin paper. While expensive, linen backing is a conservation method used to mount, stabilize, preserve, and protect vintage posters so they can be displayed or framed without compromising value.
This poster is an original first printing, not a reproduction.
