Wereldkampionenschappen 1963 – World Championships

Bold, modern, and unmistakably early 1960s, this Belgian poster by artist Herman Verbaere promotes the 1963 UCI Cycling World Championships, presented by the KBWB (the Royal Belgian Cycling League) and the UCI. The design features a rider charging straight at the viewer against a blue globe, anchored by the black world championship circle and arcing UCI rainbow bands. Venue blocks call out all three host cities and dates exactly as they were raced: the track world championships in Rocourt, near Liège, from 1 to 7 August 1963, the 100-kilometer amateur team time trial in Herentals on 8 August 1963, and the road world championships in Ronse on 10 and 11 August 1963. The 1963 professional men’s road race in Ronse was won by Belgian rider Benoni Beheyt, ahead of Rik Van Looy and Jo de Haan, giving the host nation the rainbow jersey on home roads.

Herman Verbaere was a Belgian painter and graphic artist, born in Wetteren in 1905 and died in Zottegem in 1993. He trained at the Academy in Wetteren and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent, worked as a painter, draftsman, watercolorist, and lithographer, and became well known for posters and stamp designs. Verbaere created numerous travel posters for the Belgian National Railway, NMBS or SNCB, from 1935 to 1967, and designed Belgian postage stamps between 1962 and 1970. His imagery often drew on Flemish towns and the river Scheldt. He is also credited as the designer of cycling world championship posters, including Belgian events.

This poster has been archivally and professionally linen-backed.

Virtually all original vintage posters of this era were viewed as temporary advertising and were printed on fragile, thin paper. While expensive, linen backing is a conservation method used to mount, stabilize, preserve, and protect vintage posters, allowing them to be displayed or framed without compromising their value.

This poster is an original first printing, not a reproduction.

Description

Benoni Beheyt

Benoni Beheyt is a Belgian former professional road cyclist, born 27 September 1940 in Zwijnaarde. He turned professional in 1962 and raced through 1968, winning the 1963 UCI professional road world championship in Ronse on August 11, where he outsprinted Rik Van Looy, with Jo de Haan finishing third. He won a stage of the 1964 Tour de France and took notable classics and semi-classics, including Gent-Wevelgem in 1963, GP Fourmies in 1963, and the overall Tour of Belgium in 1964. Before turning professional, he represented Belgium at the 1960 Summer Olympics in the road race and the team time trial. His 1963 world title is often remembered for the tense finish against national teammate Van Looy, a rivalry widely chronicled in retrospectives of the Ronse championships.
