A Fantastic Complete Set of 1961 Tour de France and Tour de l’Avenir Collectors Cards

These cards from 1961 are such fun.  Each card features stage information along with whimsical illustrations and detailed information about each stage.

1961 was in inaugural edition of the Tour de l’Avenir. The race was founded to attract teams from nations that had no professional riders to enter the Tour de France. Until 1967 the race was held earlier in the day, but on the same course at the Tour de France.  In 1968 the race was moved to September and since 2007 has been for riders 23 and younger.

The 1961 Tour de France found Anquetil ready to repeat his 1957 win.  A team was built to ride for overall victory and Anquetil announced he intended to take the yellow on day one of racing and keep it all the way to Paris.  Anquetil’s plan was successful, and he won the Tour by 12 minutes over Guido Carlesi and Charly Gaul.
