1954 Tour de France Poster

Exhibition Provenance: This original vintage bicycle poster was showcased at the 2018 L’Etape California by Le Tour de France Historic Tour de France Exhibit.

This wonderfully comical poster printed by Belgian newspaper Het Volk  proclaims “The Tour de France is back in full swing.”

The detail in the illustration is just fantastic; one rider is crashing into the lettering, another looking through binoculars, one using the telephone and yet another crashed out and reading.  The more you look, the more you see and laugh.

This poster has been archivally and professionally linen backed.  Virtually all original vintage posters of this era were viewed as temporary advertising and were printed on very thin paper. While expensive, linen backing is a conservation method used to mount, stabilize, preserve and protect vintage posters so they can be displayed or framed without compromising value.
