1954 Giro d’Italia Totosport Complete Postal Card Set of 22

$129.00

A fantastic complete set of Totosport postal cards from the 1954 Giro d’Italia.  The mid-century graphics are wonderful, and the colors are bright and bold.  The cards all have the same image on the front, and each features a cancellation from a different stage of the 1954 Giro.

In the sixth stage of the 1954 Giro, Carlo Clerici attacked and took the lead with a big margin, which he held all the way to the finish.

Fausto Coppi won the twentieth stage and took some time back from race leader Clerici. His fans were hoping that he would attack again on the twenty-first stage, which included the Bernina Pass, but cyclists rode slowly to protest against the racing conditions, taking almost ten hours to cover the 222 km stage; this event became known as the Bernina Strike.  When the race ended in Milan the next day, angry supporters whistled at the cyclists. For his role in the strike, Coppi was given a two-month suspension, although this was later revoked.
