1929 UCI Road World Championships, Concours Inter-Nations,Third Place Trophy – Made by Huguenin Frères

$850.00

This remarkable trophy, made by Huguenin Fréres, is a rare and historically significant artifact from the 1929 UCI Road World Championships, held in Zürich, Switzerland. Awarded for the Concours Inter-Nations, a special international team competition held alongside the official world championship races, this trophy commemorates the team that secured third place in a contest designed to foster friendly rivalry among nations.

The central medallion of the trophy, set against a rich wooden mount, features a striking relief of a cyclist in full motion, framed by the initials S.R.B. (Schweizerischer Radfahrer-Bund) and U.V.S. (Union Vélocipédique Suisse)—representing the Swiss national cycling federation in German and French, reflecting the country’s bilingual heritage. Behind the cyclist, the Swiss cross radiates outward, symbolizing the host nation’s pride and hospitality.

The lower plaque reads:

“Championnats du Monde sur Route, Zürich 1929, Concours Inter-Nations, 3e Prix”,
(World Road Championships, Zurich 1929, Inter-Nations Competition, 3rd Prize)

An additional inscription at the top credits the Union Nationale Suisse de Tourisme—the Swiss National Tourist Union—as the event’s sponsor, suggesting that the Concours Inter-Nations was both a sporting and cultural gesture promoting international camaraderie through cycling.

Though official UCI records from 1929 do not include team rankings, historical race data reveal that Italy performed strongly in the professional race, with Alfredo Binda placing third and Leonida Frascarelli fifth. Based on aggregate performances, it is possible that this trophy was awarded to the Italian national team for their third-place finish in the unofficial team classification. More research needs to be done to confirm the team rankings.

Elegant in design and rich with context, this trophy celebrates athletic achievement and is a tangible link to the golden age of European cycling—a symbol of international competition, craftsmanship, and the enduring spirit of sport.

Description

Huguenin Fréres

Huguenin Frères, renowned medal makers, began their journey not with medals, but with watch cases. In 1868, brothers Fritz and Albert Huguenin established their company in Le Locle, in Switzerland’s canton of Neuchâtel, specializing in intricately decorated watch cases. Their expertise in the niello technique, which involves creating a black design on silver, garnered them international acclaim. However, as watch case demand declined in the late 1880s, the company successfully pivoted to medal minting, seizing an era when medals were widely commissioned for various occasions.

By the turn of the century, Huguenin had become Switzerland’s leading medal manufacturer, securing both national and international commissions. Their small workshop expanded into a full-scale factory by 1899, and by 1910, the company employed over 300 people. Huguenin was not only a premier producer of medals but also played a significant role in coin production. A substantial share of Swiss medals originated in Le Locle, alongside shooting medals and vast quantities of orders, decorations, and circulation coins for countries such as Serbia, Poland, Latvia, Romania, Bolivia, and Ecuador.

Innovation remained a cornerstone of Huguenin’s success. In 1952, the company began producing the iconic snowflake-shaped medals for the World Cup of Skiing, counting FIFA, UEFA, and the International Olympic Committee among its loyal clients. A testament to their pioneering spirit, Huguenin created the world’s first color coin in 1992 for the Republic of Palau.

Despite its remarkable legacy, the company ultimately succumbed to changing times and ceased operations in 2022, marking the end of over 150 years of excellence in medal and coin production.
