1923 Cycles Automoto – Hutchinson Tires Cycling Team

This striking French Automoto and Hutchinson poster reads as a showroom wall brought to life. At the center, the words “Nos coureurs” (our riders) anchor a bold, clover-shaped arrangement of rider portraits, each name tucked neatly into its own roundel, giving the piece the feel of a team lineup, part roll call, part fan display. Around the margins, crisp mechanical vignettes, labeled “Nos machines,” “Nos écrémeuses,” and “Nos fusils” (our machines, our cream separators & our rifles), nod to the wider Automoto world of precision hardware and modern utility, turning the border into a cabinet of curiosities. The whole composition is framed in thick black ornament, with warm orange accents that make the portraits pop against the pale ground.

The historical backdrop is as strong as the design. In 1923, Henri Pélissier (not pictured) won the Tour de France riding for Automoto, with teammate Ottavio Bottecchia taking second overall, making it a defining season for the brand’s racing identity.

The portraits feature members of the 1923 Automoto–Hutchinson team: Honoré Barthélémy, Maurice Ville, Robert Jacquinot, Victor Lenaers, Hector Heusghem, Marcel Lacour, Roger Lacolle, Henri Moerenhout, and Albert Jordens.

The middle panel is a handy chart of French postal rates, shipping information, and rules. Down below, the typography shifts into pure brand theater, “Cycles Automoto” in oversized letters, and “Pneus Hutchinson” locked beneath it like a seal of quality. Even the sales pitch is period-perfect. The lower panel reads:

Si vous désirez une bicyclette irréprochable, une arme de précision, une machine à coudre, une écrémeuse, adressez vous à l’agent AUTOMOTO ou écrivez 152, avenue Malakoff à Paris et demandez le catalogue.

If you want an impeccable bicycle, a precision firearm, a sewing machine, or a cream separator, contact the AUTOMOTO agent, or write to 152 Avenue Malakoff in Paris and request the catalog.

Altogether, it is a tangible slice of early twentieth-century consumer cycling culture, when racing heroes, factory brands, and everyday products all lived on the same page.

This poster has been archivally and professionally linen-backed.

Virtually all original vintage posters of this era were viewed as temporary advertising and were printed on fragile, thin paper. While expensive, linen backing is a conservation method used to mount, stabilize, preserve, and protect vintage posters, allowing them to be displayed or framed without compromising their value.

This poster is an original first printing, not a reproduction.
